Bampton Charter Fair

Fair-Logo---colour_5x5

Tomorrow is Fair Day in Bampton. Founded in 1258 by Royal Charter of King Henry 111rd, it’s one of the oldest in the country and is a vibrant, community effort drawing crowds from miles around. Have a look at the website for pictures and details of what happens at one of England’s oldest and most traditional events.

Originally Bampton Fair was a gathering for Exmoor farmers to buy and sell livestock and also hire new workers for the coming year. This continues in the Exmoor pony sale although sadly the sheep fair has long gone due to regulation and the shift of market facilites to Exeter and other bigger centres.

Along with the Ottery St Mary Tar Barrels Ceremony it’s what makes this part of Devon absolutely unique. Neither of these events figure on “Tourist Trails” but they are what people SHOULD be coming to see if they want to get a real feel for the ancient, deep rooted communities which still form the back bone of this county.

I shall not be going to the Fair this year although I might make it to one or two of the Folk Events on the weekend after. I have the vet coming to begin another Artificial Insemination program this time on the goats. Only three this year because we are trying Laparoscopic AI so the cost is very high. Fingers crossed for a good result!

  1. How do you perform AI in sheep? Do you use frozen ram semen or fresh diluted semen. What is success rate with frozen semen? What about cost per insemination? Kindly reply.

  2. Hi there,
You can use Cervical AI or Laparoscopic AI (the same as I did) on sheep. Cervical AI has a very poor rate of success in sheep – much better in goats but still not as good as Lap AI. Fresh or frozen semen but fresh is always better if you can use that. Cost varies too much to give you figures but AI is never cheap.
You need to read up on the techniques and talk to a local vet with some experience in this. If it is difficult to find anyone in India (I think that is where you are?) then contact Innovis here in the UK http://www.innovis.com – they are in regular contact with many other AI centres all over the world and I’m sure they will know someone in India.
