Has anyone come across the Vavstuga system for tying up? Here is a link.

It does look good but I wonder if anyone has tried it? Crawling about on the floor under my Glimakra Standard is probably only one stage up in my estimation from dagging dirty sheep so anything which reduces time doing that and allows me to actually WEAVE has got to be worth exploring.
I’d be really grateful for any comments from weavers.
Hello… new to your page. Very nice!
If your treadles are rear mounted, then you could consider this system. As you will see, I have it mounted on my countermarche and it can be modified to fit most rear attached treadles. Much more civilized! I sit on a small stool at the back and 8 shafts/ 8 treadles tie up is done in 5 mins.

Hi Susan,
This looks amazing! How do I get more information?

You can visit http://www.woolhousetools.com and see the specs for this.
Do you have access to a handyman good with building stuff? Many weavers have had one homebuilt to suit their needs or you order one.

I don’t think the Vavstuga system saves much trouble. It wouldn’t on my loom because I have to use a threading tool to thread cords through the lams. I have an easier technique for my Toika: I use long cords for every position, so never have to swop a short cord for a long one. I never undo the peg under the treadle and then just re-thread the cord through the lam, if it is pegged for the lower lam there is an untidy length of cord dangling but this does not cause any problem.
However, the system Susan uses is without question easiest tie-up system, it’s been discussed a few times on the WeaveTech yahoo list and several people are using it successfully. The woodworking skills needed are fairly basic.

I have hard that the Vavstuga system doesn’t cope well under extreme tension – such as that needed for rugs etc. Sounds like Susan’s might be worth a try. Anything which takes away all that fiddling under the loom has to be good.

Greetings,
I have used the Vav Stuga tie up system at home and at Becky’s Vav Stuga (I am a club member and weave there monthly) for about 3 years now. I think that it is quite wonderful. It is simple, inexpensive, and can be rapidly modified to adjust the height of the treadles….a very elegant solution. I have found it to work well on weaving everything from finest linens to heavy rug or rep projects. On rare occasions, the plastic beads have shattered under stress, which is no big deal to fix, even in the heat of the moment. A more permanent avoidance of this can be achieved by substituting the same sized metal beads for the plastic ones. Since this has rarely been an issue for me, I haven’t bothered to modify my ties.
I really hate those little texsolv pegs that are often used. The knitting needle method is so much faster and more easily adjusted.
