Sustainable Energy Without the Hot Air

If you have not read this book, by David MacKay, Professor of Physics at the University of Cambridge, then I would suggest it as a sensible overview of the REALITY of renewables and our consumption of energy. http://www.withouthotair.com/about.html

It’s available as a free download from the website -  a refreshing change! Knowing Cambridge well, I can see how his views fit so well into the world there. So many people in the academic world  already live in the ways he describes but through financial necessity. Academics are appallingly badly paid in the UK!

The book is a straight factual account of the physics, so not a light bedtime read if you don’t have some science background, but worth the effort if you have. It’s highly readable despite the maths.

As the Public Enquiry on our Wind Farm above us here enters its last phase I just wish it was compulsory reading for all politicians. It’s not pro or anti wind but it does present the bald facts without the government’s spin and hype. The obsessive focus in our country on GENERATION without equal serious concern for CONSUMPTION is reckless and useless in my, and many others opinions. This is a link to a 10 page synopsis of the book for those who don’t have time for the whole thing.

  1. Hmm. I always wish I could get an exercise machine that stores energy in a battery. Or get bike pedals to run my spinning wheel and store the excess energy…
