Speech Making

Tomorrow I must stand up at a Public Enquiry and defend our precious Iron Mill Stream and our 2 County Wildlife Sites here. A wind farm development is proposed and whatever your views on wind energy, the developers admit that the consequence will be pollution of our stream and our valley.

If I have been a little quiet these past days it is because something as important as this deserves my full attention.  Once it is over, (and the thought of standing in front of 100 people, trying to make a case for Atlantic Salmon and Otters  is making me quake in my boots) I shall get back to normal and blogging about less contentious issues.

These are some of the little guys which depend on the ultra clean water here.

  1. The very best of good luck with your appeal, Lesley. Hope all goes well – I’m sure you will make a really convincing argument and we will keep our fingers crossed that reason prevails!

  2. I’ll be thinking of you, Lesley, and the otters, too.

  3. Good luck – but how on earth will this affect the rivers etc.? Sorry to be dim…..

  4. Hi Jenny,
I’ve just got back – knees still knocking! It will affect the Stream here and my County Wildlife Sites in the following ways. Firstly during construction, the developers admit that pollution and extra drainage will flow into the water. This is despite all possible precautions. It’s a steeply sloping site and water flows downhill. They do not try to say it won’t happen. Secondly, the turbines are sited directly on top of the stream springs. At 60m the foundations are very likely to disrupt the source of the stream. No one can say for certain either way and to do it and then find my water stops flowing seems like eco vandalism to me.

  5. Good grief! It seems that it might be a notifiable and sueable thing to me. How can they not do their homework?!

Fingers and toes crossed and prayers said…….

  6. Well done for getting up and speaking in defence of your stream and wildlife. I hope they were paying attention.
