Finishing roller for woven cloth

Sylvia in New Zealand very kindly gave me this photo of a blocking roller.

It looks relatively simple to make. I  wonder  how you make the wood waterproof enough to withstand the damp fabric? It needs to be smooth as well to avoid snagging.

I was sitting at the computer a little earlier and look who walked past the window! This is the same young fox that has been here for weeks now. He is a frequent daytime visitor. Since we have no young chickens and nothing else particularly vulnerable he is no threat to us. Most of the time he hoovers up under the bird table or the goat troughs. He is not very old so this year’s cub now striking out on his own I think. Apologies for the slightly fuzzy image but its through glass.

  1. How about three or four coats of a polyurethane varnish, or ask at the DIY about how to paint or seal wood to make it waterproof — I’ve used Thompson’s Waterseal on our porches, it lasts through three or four rainy Washington winters before it needs a touch up.
